Have a kid interested in an artistic spin on photography? The White Bear Center for the Arts’ H’art of Photography class provides an opportunity to do just that.
Instructor Kari McGrath is a self-taught photographer with a background in art. McGrath has worked with the Minneapolis Art Institute for 20 years, and now brings her talents to the kids of the White Bear Lake area. “I wanted to teach kids how to have a photographic AWARENESS and how to look at things differently inside and outside,” McGrath says.
Danielle Cezanne, program director at the art center, says kids who work with McGrath “always produce the most interesting photographs. The photos show different aspects of things we see every day.”
McGrath wants kids to not be afraid to work with the photos—a lot of photos people take never make it out of their flash drives or phones. She prints out a couple of black and white photo shot by each student. The kids are then encouraged to add color back to the photo, either with watercolors or pencils. “I want the kids to make art out of the photos, and I encourage them to use them,” says McGrath.
