This very charming, wonderfully well-written (and meticulously researched) biography of Rachel Carson, the shy, scholarly “mother of the environmental movement,” will be released next month on the 50th anniversary of her award-winning book, Silent Spring. Bill Souder is also the author of Plague of Frogs and Under a Wild Sky (a biography of John James Audubon that was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize). All signs point to this being another big one for Souder and a real treat for his readers—don’t miss it.

Just when we wondered if Peter Geye could top Safe from the Sea, along comes this terrific new story from the logging camps of the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota (due to be released October 2). Spanning the 1890s to 1937, this is the story of Odd Eide and his “family.” Dark secrets set against a harsh landscape will put you in the mind of an Ingmar Bergman film. This is a must-read from a talented Minneapolis author.
BIO: Susie Fruncillo is one of four women who co-own Lake Country Booksellers, which has been on the corner of Fourth and Washington in White Bear Lake for 32 years. Besides recommending and selling books, Susie likes being with her family and friends, reading (of course!), knitting, gardening, bike riding and spending quiet time with her husband, dog and cat at their cabin in northern Wisconsin.
