Fall isn’t simply a change in the weather. It brings a transformation in decor, activities and flavors. Amidst pumpkin and apple flavored pies and lattes, vice president and co-owner of Elevated Beer, Wine & Spirits Tom Boland offers some subtle fall-time drink recommendations perfect for bringing in the season.
For beer, Boland recommends Oktoberfest. “Many breweries large and small make them, but an interesting one I like is Sierra Nevada,” Boland says. “They collaborate with different breweries each year and this year it’s Weihenstephaner—the oldest brewery in the world and a fine maker of classic Oktoberfest styles.”
If you’re more into cider, try Sociable Cider Werks Rusty Chain for its not too sweet, but not too dry quality and the added cranberry giving it a tart finish and vibrant red color.
When it comes to white wine, Boland says riesling is a good option this time of year. “Try a drier version from the Pacific Northwest like Kung Fu Girl by Charles Smith,” he says.
For red wine lovers, Boland advocates mixing it up. “Instead of another boring cab, try a Spanish tempranillo like Cune Crianza,” he says. “Good acidity and spice without being too dry, it will pair well with stick-to-your ribs foods like sausage, chili or beef stew.”
A Punch All Can Enjoy
Those looking to spice up their fall festivities with a punch that’s not packing a punch are in luck this year. Tom Boland, vice president and co-owner of Elevated Beer, Wine & Spirits, offers a recipe for a non-alcoholic punch suitable for adult Halloween parties or any fall get-togethers.
Apple Old Fashioned Punch:
1/2 gallon apple cider
32 ounces (1 liter) Gosling’s ginger beer
Juice from 1 lemon
1/2 ounce Bittercube cherry vanilla bark bitters
Orange wedge and maraschino cherry (for garnish)
Combine ingredients and pour over ice in a low-ball tumbler glass and garnish with an orange wedge and maraschino cherry.
