Tom Boland, owner of Elevated Beer Wine & Spirits in White Bear Lake, shares recipes for two cocktails perfect for warming up after a bone-chilling day.
Boland says, “I was inspired by Vikre Distillery’s new Voyageur aquavit, which is aged in cognac barrels for a year. The cognac adds oak and floral notes which combine well with warm apple cider for a Nordic toddy.”
Nordic Toddy (serves 1)
Into your favorite mug, add:
- 4 oz. hot apple cider
- 1 oz. Vikre Voyageur aquavit
- ½ oz. St. Germain elderflower liqueur
Stir in a teaspoon of honey and garnish with a lemon twist.
Boland also suggests an alternative to the Nordic toddy. “The staff here also had an idea for an aquavit old-fashioned if you feel like hot apple cider is overused. The amaretto takes the place of sugar,” says Boland.
Aquavit Old-Fashioned (serves 1)
- Lowball glass
- 1 ½ oz. Vikre Voyageur aquavit
- ½ oz. amaretto
- 2 dashes Antica Formula sweet vermouth
- 1 orange wedge
- 1 maraschino cherry
- 1-2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Ice (optional)
In a lowball glass muddle the orange wedge, maraschino cherry and bitters together with the amaretto. Fill glass with ice (if desired.) Top off with the aquavit and stir.
