It’s a Hit!

Gary Schafer’s favorite pastime makes for an award-winning photo.

Gary Schafer has worked both as a teacher and in the computer industry, but he’s been passionate about photography since the 1970s. It wasn’t until he retired in 2003 from Mounds View Public Schools that Schafer bought a digital camera and got serious about taking photos. He’s been entering his photos in the Lens on the Lake photo contest ever since, including the 2015 contest, in which his photo, It’s a Hit!, garnered second place in the activities and events category.

Schafer loves to capture any kind of community event—including this AA traveling conference baseball game at Mahtomedi. Mike Hershey (pictured) and his team went on to play in the final tournament at the end of the 2015 season. Schafer enjoys photography like this because it allows him to connect with people. “It makes me feel a part of the community,” he says. “It gets me outside.”
