Jerene Bailey of Salon 61 in White Bear Lake

A local salon owner boosts confidence, one strand at a time.
Jerene Bailey's "wig room" offers 50 wigs in a variety of styles, colors and prices.

For Jerene Bailey, owner of Salon 61, selling wigs is about giving women confidence.

Whether clients have cancer or other medical issues that cause hair thinning, Bailey has a wig in any shape or style, from curly to wavy to straight, to help them feel better about themselves. She recently added a “wig room” designed specifically to meet the needs of her clients: comfortable chairs, warm lighting and inviting atmosphere, and all of it completely private. “My clients start out nervous,” she says. “They come into the room and when they come out, no one knows that they are any different, that they don’t have hair.” Bailey has nearly 50 wigs in stock to choose from, which cost anywhere from $125 to $425.

While she has been in the hair business for nearly 35 years, Bailey feels the most satisfied with her work in the wig world. Some wigs are covered by insurance (60 percent). “[The clients] are broken down when they come in,” she says. “I want them to feel confident, because that’s how they should feel.”
