Along with flying footballs and falling leaves, one sure sign of autumn in White Bear Lake is customers coming into the Cup & Cone shop on Fourth Street to stock up on quarts of their favorite flavors—to last them through those winter months. Late-October closing has been a tradition since Keith Johnstone founded the shop in 1973, according to his son Rick, a former school teacher who bought the business four years ago.
“People will buy two or three quarts at a time and come back again when the flavor changes so they can have all their favorite flavors throughout the season—all our flavors-of-the-day (orange, strawberry, watermelon, raspberry, lemon, lime, grape, cherry),” Rick says. During the warm-weather months, the store sells a lot of “sunset splashes”—the flavor of the day mixed with Sprite—and “crunchi crème” cones—candy bars mixed in ice cream on a cone). When the weather turns cooler in the fall, people are generally less interested in ice cream cones, but they tend to order more hot brownie sundaes, and hot caramel and fudge sundaes. $4.95/quart
