Sunrise Park students win big at National History Day.
Terra Sikorski and her teacher, Huy Nguyen.

This past June, six phenomenal seventh-grade students from Sunrise Park Middle School in White Bear Lake, under the instruction of history teacher Huy Nguyen, won national awards at National History Day in College Park, Maryland.

“Over 600,000 students participated in History Day from the U.S., Europe and Asia, and only 3,046 of those students qualified for nationals,” says Nguyen. “Our students were in the top .5 percent of all students who did History Day.”

Congratulations to Terra Sikorski, who finished third in the entire nation with her individual exhibit, “Ryan White: A Boy Without Rights Challenges A Nation;” Allison Ackerknecht, Kari Breuer and Margaret Philippi, who finished fourth in the nation with their group exhibit, “The Americans With Disabilities Act: Protecting the Rights of the Disabled;” and Sabrina Brown and Anna Lee, who finished sixth in the nation with their website, “Korematsu v. United States: Taking Responsibility for Rights Denied.” Their exhibit on the American Disabilities Act also won Outstanding Project from Minnesota in the junior division.
