Barbara Mundis, who together with her wife Heather owns All Star Pet Hotel & Day Care, takes the well-being of pets seriously. The business—which offers dog day care, a canine hotel, a feline hotel, and a hotel for pocket pets and exotic pets—opened in March 2019.
“I did about a year and a half of research and planning before opening,” says Mundis.
Her research included how to ensure All Star could be a fear-free facility.
“The pet care industry took a long time to figure out why dogs are freaked out when they go to the vet. It’s not a surprise—there are bright lights, slippery floors and tables,” she says.
For a fear-free environment, everything down to paint color needs to be researched, says Mundis. “We avoid white. It breeds excitement, not relaxation and calm,” she says. “Color is important because the dogs are looking at it all day.”
At day care, dogs are placed in play groups based on their size and disposition.
Mundis takes care to learn about each pet. Each dog is evaluated before being admitted to day care. Dog parents also fill out a detailed application before their pets begin attending.
“We love what we do. Our staff is in love with what they do. We have all five-star reviews on Facebook and Google, and I think that’s why. We’re really about what’s best for pets and their people,” says Mundis. All Star partners with Rita Tretter of Canine Revival to offer a puppy class and a canine good citizen class.
Mundis is delighted she chose White Bear Lake as the location for All Star. “It’s such an animal-friendly community. Business-wise and personally, it’s a great fit. I hope we’re giving the community as much as they’ve given to us,” she says.
