Open-Air Classrooms

Land restoration projects take learning outdoors at the White Bear Montessori School.

To expand their outdoor learning areas, the White Bear Montessori School has
added a rain garden to the campus. The school, which serves students from
toddlers to 8 years old, had been approached to create a rain garden because it
is in an area in need of water conservation. Last year, after receiving a
matching grant, the school was able to back the restoration project.

Metro Blooms and Nelco Landscape, which designed and planted the space,
involved students at the school by having them select the plant life for the
750-square-foot garden; students also attended garden workshops and created a
book to document all aspects of plant and insect life.

“The rain garden was inspiration for the school community to do something
useful to this acre of land that was too dangerous for kids,” says head of
school, Marnie McPherson.

The next outdoor project the school will be tackling is the “Field of
Dreams,” a one-acre learning environment that will include trails and native
plants.
