Mahtomedi High School students Jade Geiger, Calvin Condo, Duncan Charlesworth, Isaac Legred, Erick Shimnowski and Aaron Swanson began a project last October with the goal of designing a drone that would use precision pesticide spraying for crops. “This is significant because it would decrease environmental harm and save farmers a lot of money,” says team advisor and science and engineering teacher Bryan Farmer. The students spent five months designing and planning their solution, and presented it at the state competition for the National Real World Design Challenge on April 15. The team won the chance to compete at nationals and will present their solution virtually for the national competition this November in Washington, D.C., this time applying it to a new scenario.
