October is abuzz with activity at the Pine Tree Apple Orchard as visitors pick their own pumpkins, apples are transformed in the bakery, local artists such as Greenwood Tree and the Elizabethan Syngers perform, and the corn maze and wagon rides open.
All are welcome to pick their own pumpkins in preparation for Halloween, but picking your own apples is not an option, as each apple has its future already planned. “We need every single apple that falls off of the trees; we have a use for each one,” explains Barb Jacobson. As you might guess, apple pie is the most popular bakery item in the orchard bakeshop, but other treats such as rollovers and muffins are also for sale.
The orchard hosts a Run & Walk for Apples featuring a 5-mile course through the grounds. This is one of Jacobson’s favorite events; she notes that the views of Pine Tree Lake are spectacular on the hill, and “sometimes you can see St. Paul.”
