This month, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church’s summer block party will be 10 years strong. The popular event started in 2006 with 400 people in attendance, and public participation has only grown. Last year, the party pulled in over 2,000 people, a feat that took around 130 volunteers to make happen. One reason people look forward to the block party every year is that, according to director Carrin Mahmood, it is “a wallet-free event.” “Pastor Mike Carlson wanted to do something to give back to the community,” she says. Everything is free and open to the public, from the food to the kids’ activities.
This great community event features performances by Sara Renner and the Elements, The Covers, as well as other artists, including Billy Steele, and David Young and Going to the Sun.
There will be activities for kids—trolley rides, a petting zoo, inflatables and games—and, of course, plenty of food. Party eats include hot dogs, the much-loved corn-on-the-cob, apples, root beer and more. This year, the church festival is featuring Fair Hair, which, in addition to face painting, will feature fun hairdo opportunities for the kiddos.
This night of family fun is a wonderful way to start out the fall season. If it rains, don’t worry—they’ll move the bands indoors.
