Katy Vernon, a London-born singer/songwriter who has been a White Bear Lake resident for eight years, always dreamed of being a musician. “Even as a little kid I would make up songs,” she says. As she grew, she wrote about life, love and loss.
Years later, after taking a break to raise a family, Vernon reignited her musical ambition in 2012 with a successful Kickstarter campaign, which helped finance her first CD. “Kickstarter did more than raise the money,” Vernon says. “It did its job—it kick-started my career.”
This fall, Vernon released her second album, Present, which is another biographical exploration, and has more of a pop/rock sound, as opposed to the folk sound of the first album. Vernon still plays her signature ukulele; however, the new album features more electric guitar.
The artist has been gigging steadily: She performed at Icehouse with Kevin Bowe for her CD release show, earned an Aster Cafe residency for December, performed with Garrison Keillor at the Fitzgerald Theater, has been featured at the Cowles Center with the James Sewell Ballet, and organized and performed at the annual Uke Festival. And on February 7, Vernon will perform at the 2016 Como Under Glass music series at the Como Conservatory.
“Keep pushing yourself and go where you know you haven’t gone before,” says Vernon, on her philosophy of life. “And even then, at the end of the day, you feel like you are growing.”
