Valentine’s Day is about love in all its forms, and this year’s Sweetheart Dance is the perfect chance for parents and children to celebrate together. Sponsored by Mahtomedi Community Education, the event made its debut last year and is back again for 2017, now even bigger and better than before.

“The Sweetheart Dance was done successfully in a neighboring district, so we borrowed the idea from them,” says elementary school-age care coordinator Jamie O’Hara. “I thought it was a huge success.”

Attendance hit nearly 200 last year, and even more people are expected at this year’s dance, as the event is expanding to accommodate sweethearts of all ages.

“We are adding a third- through fifth-grade dance per the request of parents who were sad that there wasn’t a dance for older kids, as well as a dance during the day for seniors to attend,” O’Hara explains.

At any one of the dances, adults and kids alike can enjoy tasty snacks and refreshing beverages as a DJ spins tunes. Be sure to stop by the photo booth for a memento of the fun-filled night, and don’t worry too much about gussying up; there is no required or recommended attire. O’Hara encourages attendees to simply “wear whatever you feel comfortable in.” Just don’t forget your dancing shoes!
