This portrait of a grinning golden retriever snagged first place in the Pets category of our Lens on the Lake photo contest

“She’s the only dog we’ve ever had that I can say has a good sense of humor,” Maureen McCall says of Rosie, the 5-year-old golden retriever she and her husband Randy adopted from a rescue center in Des Moines, Iowa. McCall snapped this picture with her iPhone while Rosie sought the shadiest spot in the garden on an early summer day and snagged McCall first place in the Pets category of our Lens on the Lake contest. “That’s the nice thing about having a smartphone, always having a camera with you,” she says, laughing as she mentions that many of her pictures feature her photogenic canine.
