For 20 years, White Bear Lake residents have come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones, and raise funds to fight against cancer at the Relay for Life of White Bear Lake. The annual overnight event will occur as usual in July, but this year, one of its key players will be missing: its founder, Keith Warner, who passed away in December from brain cancer.
Warner started Relay for Life of White Bear Lake with his wife, Patty, in honor of their daughter, Lori, who passed away from cancer. Relay for Life of White Bear Lake is working this year to honor Warner’s memory and all of the important work he did for the organization.
This community event, which is open to everyone, typically draws approximately 1,500 people from White Bear Lake and surrounding communities. Around 70 teams are expected to participate in this year’s Relay for Life of White Bear Lake.
“Cancer doesn’t discriminate against who it touches, so we want anybody and everybody to participate,” says Katy Fischgrabe, a Relay for Life specialist in the Midwest division.
Last year, $240,000 was raised to help fund groundbreaking research, as well as services for cancer patients and their caregivers. In the spirit of Keith Warner, Relay for Life of White Bear Lake will strive to “make it happen” again.
