Winter tends to make us nostalgic for summer. Faith Bastien of Lake Country Booksellers helps us revisit sunny days with these two book recommendations.
This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger
Atria Books, 2019
Bastien says, “This Tender Land, William Kent Krueger’s new stand-alone novel takes place in the summer of 1932. Four kids break out of a grim, poorly-run Native American orphanage in search of a new home for themselves. Their lives become full of adventure as they grapple with the unknown.”
Summer of ’69 by Elin Hilderbrand
Little, Brown, 2019
Bastien says, “The book takes place on the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. There’s a brother in Vietnam, an older sister settling into an unhappy marriage, and another sister working overnight in an upscale hotel. The youngest sister is just trying to figure it all out. This book appeals to me because so much happened in the summer of 1969—Woodstock, the moon landing, Chappaquiddick. It reminds me of that eventful [time].”
