Water Ballet

Tom Le Vere captures sailing scows on White Bear Lake.

“Scows on White Bear Lake” garnered first place in the Activities and Events category.

While anchored in the middle of White Bear Lake on a sunny day in August a couple of years ago, Tom Le Vere and a fellow sailboat racer were watching a regatta when Le Vere captured the moment with his smartphone camera. A sailor himself, Le Vere understood the precise beauty that racing a sailboat could represent. “I watch these boats and marvel at their beauty and speed as their crews perform maneuvers in perfect unison that reminds me of a ballet—only on water,” says Le Vere.

Le Vere is as passionate about photography as he is about sailing. “Growing up I loved photography, and before long, found myself with a 35mm Olympus OM1 System,” he says. He has since upgraded to something smaller: an iPhone 5. One of these photos is the image he submitted to our annual Lens on the Lake photo contest. The lovely snapshot also hangs proudly in a large frame in his office.
