Gary Schafer has worked both as a teacher and in the computer industry, but he’s been passionate about photography since the 1970s. It wasn’t until he retired in 2003 from Mounds View Public Schools that Schafer bought a digital camera and got serious about taking photos.
The popular family beach along Lake Avenue between Tenth and Eleventh streets was once nothing more than overgrown lakeshore. In 1946, a committee of representatives from many of the community’s organizations came together to make the swimming beach a reality.
Summer in the land of 10,000 lakes wouldn’t be complete without spending the nicest days fishing off the end of the dock.
Summertime in White Bear Lake means the races begin at the White Bear Lake Yacht Club. It was on a Monday evening last June that Jay Rendall captured this shot of an A-scow crew “hiking”—balancing the boat against the push of the wind.
California Dreamin'

White Bear Lake resident Jim Vincent has been taking pictures since his high school days. His favorite photo subject is wildlife, including this award-winning shot, Gold-N-Wing, of a brave dragonfly, seemingly posing for its close-up.

Katherine Abbott Park is situated on more than 70 acres of land in the city of Mahtomedi, a mix of hardwood forest, prairie and wetlands. Through the property once ran the Twin City Rapid Transit Co.
Garnering an honorable mention in the City Landmarks category, Dale Grambush’s photo, Nearing Ice Out, caught White Bear Lake in seasonal transition.
