It seems the defining question of young adulthood is “What do you want to be when you grow up?” While this question might seem daunting, there is a program for those considering a career in fire service or first response: the Fire Explorers program through the White Bear Lake Fire Department.

The Early Childhood Learning Center at Tamarack Nature Center isn’t your ordinary preschool. In fact, from the moment you step onto the 320-acre property, it’s easy to see the unique center has much to offer its young learners.

Maple syrup. It tastes great on pancakes, waffles and bacon, not to mention it is a delicious ingredient in many recipes.

Michael Djupstrom is the youngest White Bear Lake Area High School alumnus to be inducted into the White Bear Lake Area Alumni Association. There are 23 prior recipients, all graduating between 1927 and 1966, though anyone can be nominated 10 years after graduating.

The White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation’s ninth annual fundraiser, Beyond the Shores, will be held October 23 at the White Bear Yacht Club from 6 to 9:30 p.m. There will be a buffet-style dinner, entertainment and an auction.

Mahtomedi High School students Jade Geiger, Calvin Condo, Duncan Charlesworth, Isaac Legred, Erick Shimnowski and Aaron Swanson began a project last October with the goal of designing a drone that would use precision pesticide spraying for crops.

If pressed, many of us could come up with words that define our lives, that drive and inspire us to be who we are—or who we aspire to be. We expect sage advice like this to flow like water from our elders, from people in high level careers or from life experience.

In 1973, Jim Hansen graduated from Hill-Murray School and set out to conquer the business world. For a busy 30-year period, Hansen worked at multiple organizations and served on boards in both the profit and nonprofit sectors.
