Super Spiders

(Ages 4-10, with adult, 11+) 

Spiders are nature's bug zappers! Meet live spiders and learn about webs and spider silk. Put together a spider identification book to take home. Hike to look for orb, funnel, jumping and crab spiders. Wear shoes suitable for hiking.

Phenology Walk

(Adults, and Children 10 and up with Adult)

Help the Nature Center study and record wildlife observations during the current season. Option to bring your own camera, smartphone or tablet and download the iNaturalist app ahead of time.  If rainy, program will be cancelled.

BLOOMS OF FISH CREEK

(FOR ADULTS & CHILDREN AGES 10+ WITH ADULT)

AT FISH CREEK, MEET AT OAKWOOD CHURCH PARKING LOT 1388 POINT DOUGLAS RD S, SAINT PAUL, MN 55119

Walk the secret and marvelous canyon of Fish Creek to search for woodland wildflowers. Bring hiking sticks, or borrow from the nature center. The trail is narrow and uneven, wear sturdy shoes and long pants. Read more about BLOOMS OF FISH CREEK

Invasive Plant Blitz at Fish Creek

Help protect our newest preserve by searching for and marking invasive plants for removal!  Learn Ramsey County CWMA early detection species and use the EDDMapS App on your smart phone to report!  Species include wild parsnip, Oriental bittersweet, narrow-leaf bittercress, common tansy and Japanese hedge parsley.  Parsnip may cause burns; long pants, closed-toe footwear, tall socks, gloves and a long sleeved shirt are highly recommended. MOTHERS DAY WILDLIFE STROLL

(FOR ALL AGES, CHILDREN, WITH ADULT)

Take your Mom and/or Grandma for a Nature Walk! Learn about some Wildlife Moms on the pond as you explore on the trails with the Naturalist. Will the ducks and geese Mommas still be laying on their eggs in the nest, or will the babies be hatched? Let’s find out! Create a special Mother’s Day card for your Mom, your Grandma, or your Baby to help you remember this special day. Dads are welcome too! If it is too rainy to walk the trails, we will still show a spring pond slideshow, and you can explore the exhibit room, and make a card. Read more about MOTHERS DAY WILDLIFE STROLL

WEED ‘EM & REAP

Help the naturalist weed, and learn during this fun work event! Experienced and new gardeners alike are invited to dig in to the native plant gardens at the Maplewood Nature Center with the Naturalist. By the time you leave, you will be able to identify at least four native plants and four weeds. We will be transplanting plants, so there may be a chance to take some divisions home. iNATURALIST TRAINING 

(ADULTS, AND CHILDREN 10 AND UP WITH ADULT)

Learn to Track Phenology with iNaturalist. We’ll meet one Friday every month March-May. We will walk and observe plants and wildlife happenings on the trails, and then record what we see back at the nature center.
