In the March issue we revisit favorite hearty dishes from lake-area eateries, meet a North Oaks native who competes on Bear Grylls' The Island, and learn about the maple syrup process with Tamarack Nature Center.

The former passenger and freight depot that sits at Fourth Street on the west side of White Bear’s only remaining north-south railroad track was constructed in 1935 of repurposed bricks from the roundhouse building that once stood two blocks to the south.

 

We can see the end of the tunnel; the long winter nights are slowly giving way to the promise of spring. So to get us through the last vestiges of cold weather, we revisit a few warmer-upper dishes that will have you feeling satiated, satisfied and oh, so toasty.

What happens when you place 14 modern men on a remote island for four weeks with nothing but some video equipment? You get NBC’s reality show, The Island, hosted by Bear Grylls, and local boy Jud Nichols was one of the contestants.

 

When Mark Olson was in seventh grade, he told his parents he was going to be a carpenter. “Everything I did from that point on, through school and classes, it was kind of my focus,” he says.

 

In July, a group of local White Bear Lake enthusiasts banded together to form the group Friends of White Bear Lake.

Orloske was standing on her driveway in the late spring when she saw her neighbor’s dog, Crixus, peering out through the crack in her fence.
