For its 18th season, 45 to 60 Ski Otters water-skiers will strap on their skis and perform one of the most exciting shows in the Midwest. This year’s team consists of 120 members, including nationally ranked ski champions, four-time regional jump-team skiers, and three members selected to be on the U.S. Water Ski team. Each season comes with a new theme, complete with costumes and choreography; this year’s is based on the movie Footloose and has been dubbed Skiloose.
The Ski Otters are always looking for new members, and you don’t necessarily have to be great in the water. Boat drivers, announcers, dock coordinators, concessions workers and people behind the scenes are also needed to help the show make a big splash. The shows are at 6 p.m. Sundays through August at Goose Lake and are open to the public. The best part? The event is completely free. “Skiing is an integrated family sport,” says Kurt Carpenter, Ski Otter coordinator. “You can actually ski with your kids and that’s what makes it unique. This ski show is a gem right in your backyard.”
