Summer festivals are a tradition in many Minnesota communities, and Birchwood Village on the south shore of White Bear Lake is no exception. An early celebration that still continues is the Birchwood Fourth of July Parade.

 

If a big old juicy burger sounds like a great summer meal, Lucy’s Burgers brings a new flair to the classic grill favorite. It’s one of the newest additions to the White Bear area and features all the mouthwatering burgers imaginable.

 

If you’re looking for something fun to do on the Fourth of July, celebrate the 50th year of Manitou Days and attend its fireworks display. The fireworks “are shot off on a barge, which is anchored 900 feet from shore,” says Dick Galena, the chair of  the White Bear Lake Fireworks Committee.

 

Light the sparklers, cue the orchestra and prep the parade, it’s time for our fifth annual Best of White Bear Lake!

 

Two local authors have recently published books, and we talked to each of them about their inspirations and process. Sarah Ahiers’ first book, Assassin’s Heart, came out last year and was a 2017 Minnesota Book Award finalist. The sequel, Thief’s Cunning, was released in June.

 

One of the fastest-growing clubs at White Bear Lake Area High School-North Campus started—as many things do these days—with a Google search.

 

Getting a fresh start can mean a variety of things: moving to a new place, getting all the house chores done before the start of a new week, getting a fresh haircut before starting a new job, or redecorating the house.

 

Christine McMakin has been curling since she was five years old; however, she jokes it’s technically been longer. “I always tell people ‘before I was born,’ because curling in my family is a big family sport,” McMakin says.

 

Capturing moments has always been important for Darcie Lewandowski, who has been involved with photography since she was young. “Photos are like the snapshots in time. Those memories we might not always remember later on,” Lewandowski says.

 

Kristi Gess, a White Bear Lake native, started at Orangetheory Fitness four years ago after an old high school friend reached out to her on Facebook about a head coach position. She was instantly hooked when she found out more.

 

Residents at Cerenity Senior Care had the pleasure of watching caterpillars turn into butterflies in their own monarch garden. “We planted [milkweed] early July, and in August, we had caterpillars.

 

Erin White’s passion for art began when she was 15 years old. “I think that a lot of it was my teachers in junior high,” White says. “They thought that I was pretty good at it, so they were always teaching me techniques and using my work as an example, and that really inspired me.”
