For Danielle Rode, owner of Upsy-Daisy in downtown White Bear Lake, the moniker of DIY Expert fits like the proverbial handcrafted glove. And, truth be told, that glove could also fit nicely on many of the handy and creative folks of her family tree. “My mother, Clare [Jacobsen], comes from a long line of seamstresses,” Rode says. “My grandmothers were always sewing, and my grandfather was very mechanical and fixing things.”

The event, which is open to residents of Solid Ground, lets those residents choose donated holiday gifts for their children; all shoppers are matched with volunteers to help find the perfect gift for every child. Holiday Sweet Treat

Cranberry, Walnut (or Pecan) and Orange Muffins
(Makes 12 muffins)

Ingredients:

  • 2 navel oranges
  • 1 cup cranberries, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 2/3 cup plus 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/3 cup Autumn Harvest’s Meyer lemon or blood orange olive oil
  • 1 egg

Annual Santa Skate at White Bear Lake Sports Center

You’ve heard of Santa on his sleigh, but what about Santa on skates? For the past five Decembers, each year more than 75 White Bear Lake kids and their parents have been heading down to White Bear Lake Sports Center for the Santa Skate, which is an afternoon of skating, holiday games, crafts, face painting, treats and music from disc jockey Steve Joyze.
