In the September issue get to know Angelia Millender as she takes the helm at Century College.

Dr. Robert Reif was a household name around the White Bear area in the 1950s and 1960s. His downtown office was one of several general practitioners who served our community, but his brand of care had a special touch.

 

Some days, it can be hard to tell if you’re on the right path to achieving your goals, but for Shawn and Barbara Smith, the dozens of loyal regulars at their White Bear Lake restaurant are a sure sign of success.

On his way to Askov, Minnesota, on a Monday morning, Joe Kimball’s ears perked up at the news on the radio: Police were reporting a double homicide in Duluth. It was June 27, 1977, and the Minneapolis Tribune reporter was en route to cover a story on strawberry farmers.

 

White Bear Lake resident Jill Hazel stumbled upon papermaking about 20 years ago, when she saw a mold in a craft store. She took it home and started working with it, and soon her dad made her papermaking equipment—a larger, custom mold and deckle.

 

The middle school years can be awkward for any child, so it’s good that there are schools like Magnuson Christian School (MCS) to help children through it.

 

Two coaches, one philosophy. That's one way to sum up the White Bear Lake Area High School boys and girls tennis teams, with coaches Jackson Farley and Christine Anderson at the helm.

 

As a serial entrepreneur, Kurt Heikkila knows that the path to innovation is often as challenging as it is rewarding. “Most of the things I do are messy, but you become comfortable with them being messy,” he says.

 

Inside the trendy hotspot in White Bear, nestled above Mizu Japanese in Boatworks Commons, is a relatively new yoga studio, Studio One Yoga, which offers “yoga for everyone,” says Dariush Moslemi, co-owner with his wife, Sarah.

 

Taste of White Bear Lake returns for its sixth year of delectable food and live music. The venue offers food samples from 20 restaurants, including Donatelli’s, EAT!@Banning and 5th, Keys Café and Bakery, and many more. There will also be wine tasting and a silent auction.

 

Terry O’Loughlin, a passionate photographer for the last few decades, received second place in the Lens on the Lake contest for his photo illustrating water-ski course markers on a serene White Bear Lake. One day last summer, he awoke before 7 a.m. to capture the tranquility of the moment.

 

Football is definitely a team sport. And John Schwietz and some other football parents at Mahtomedi High School wanted to make sure everyone felt like part of the team. “We wanted to take what was an ordinary experience and turn it into something extraordinary,” Schwietz says.

 

Century College gained a new president in July. Angelia Millender began her journey in education in Chicago public schools, but her start in higher education began at Robert Morris University in Chicago.
